Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub was enough. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to know that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also on the midfielder to fit into the tactical structures and player rankings essential with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.
Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Individual quality is important but England understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when stardom takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
Bellingham had much to ponder after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched England qualify at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about appreciating the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have made his squad place precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now offer support for the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham just has the edge. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he has. We all need to help him and establish an environment which he can use this edge towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
The star took up much of the focus at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games against one opponent and Albania. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of love and guidance. Foden has been absent for England since March and has found it hard to perform well this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to include another youngster once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Is selecting five No 10s to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s game in the process.
It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it disrupts the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the other flank?’” he said. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when the player has not looked himself in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing his club in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”
The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a sense of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him onside but he will be observing him closely. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an more effective one.
