‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s road from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic

Whenhe first time the Athletic striker played in the UK, an 18-year-old playing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he found the net. During his subsequent match he appeared in British turf, against Sunderland weeks after, he scored. The third time, against Manchester City soon after, indeed, he repeated the feat. When he returned to the northwest to face United at the sports complex in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, as well. “In fact,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker says, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, it’s typical. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Man United, the usual talk. It’s unclear the validity, but supposing an offer came, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is about to start; after it, the brief trip to Loiu airport and a further journey to Britain, now to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It has become a challenging campaign for the team, partially owing to the pressures of being here. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in European competition. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.

In the three years since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river surrounded by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Now he is the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and debuting in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after his first-team bow in that summer, he went through a torn cruciate, being released, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the first team but each step you advance through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a turning point because it shifted the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it helps. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”

You also have to play. The striker moved upset in 2020, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and should the time come a vacancy arises in your position, a return could happen. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

No wonder he says savor the moment. Especially after last year which, at times, was involved suffering. From top scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
